National Insurance number

Your permanent tax and benefits reference.

The decision here

Have you applied, and do you have the reference to quote if asked?

What to know before you act

  • You can legally start work before your number arrives — an employer refusing on that basis is wrong.
  • Some visas print the number on the original documents; check before applying again.
  • It never changes and is never reissued as a different number.

Do this

  • Get or confirm your National Insurance number

Apply for an NI number, or find the one already issued to you.

If you get stuck

No response weeks after applying

Usually because: Backlog or an address mismatch.

Do this instead: Keep your application reference, chase through the official helpline, and give your employer the reference meanwhile.
