Right-to-Work Proof Guide
How to prove your right to work, which share code to generate, and what an employer may and may not ask for.
When this helps: Employment setup or a first job offer
What you end up with: A valid share code and a clear note of your work conditions.
Time: about 15 minutes
Before you generate a code
- Check the work conditions attached to your own permission — hour limits apply to you, not only to the employer.
- Share codes are purpose-specific: a right-to-work code is not a right-to-rent code.
- Codes expire. Generate a fresh one when an employer asks rather than reusing an old one.
What an employer needs
- Your share code and your date of birth — that is enough for the official online check.
- You can start work once the check is complete; a National Insurance number is a separate matter.
