Understanding Your First UK Payslip
Read your pay, deductions and tax code, and know when something is worth querying.
When this helps: First employment or first payday
What you end up with: You can explain every line of your payslip and know what to check with HMRC.
Time: about 20 minutes
The lines that matter
- Gross pay, then each deduction, then net pay — the figure that reaches your account.
- Your tax code, which tells the employer how much tax-free pay to apply.
- National Insurance contributions and, if you have joined one, pension contributions.
Why a tax code can be wrong
- Incorrect or incomplete starter information can cause you to pay too much or too little tax.
- If you have a P45 from a previous UK job, give it to your employer.
- If you do not have a P45, the HMRC starter checklist may be the right route.
Checking it yourself
- Sign in to your personal tax account to see the code HMRC holds for you.
- Query a code with HMRC rather than with your employer — the employer applies it, HMRC sets it.
